Divorce Cost in Ireland: Fees, Outlays and Questions to Ask

Why legal costs vary and what to ask before instructing a solicitor.

Reviewed August 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.

Cost depends on complexity

The largest distinction is usually between an agreed case and contested proceedings. Disputes about property, businesses, pensions, maintenance or children require more work and may involve barristers, valuers, accountants or pension experts.

Ask what is included

Request written information about professional fees, VAT, court outlay, service costs, counsel and expert fees. A fixed fee may be possible for a defined agreed process but normally cannot cover work outside that scope.

Cost is not the only measure

A cheap agreement can be expensive if pension, tax, property or enforcement consequences are missed. The objective is a proportionate process and an informed, workable outcome.

Control the process

Organised documents, realistic priorities, prompt responses and appropriate mediation can reduce unnecessary correspondence and cost.
