The child's welfare is central
Divorce does not end parental responsibilities. Parents may need arrangements for guardianship, custody, day-to-day care, access and important decisions.
Make arrangements practical
Consider school, travel, activities, holidays, communication, medical decisions, new partners and how arrangements will change as children grow.
Listen without placing children in the dispute
Children should not be asked to choose sides or carry messages. Their views may be relevant depending on age and maturity, but the process should protect them from adult conflict.
Mediation may help
The Legal Aid Board provides a free family mediation service. Legal advice remains important because mediators do not give legal or financial advice.
